애프터버너는 미국 록 밴드 댄스 가빈 댄스의 아홉 번째 정규 스튜디오 앨범이다. 2020년 4월 24일, 라이즈 레코드에서 발매된 이 앨범은 그룹의 8번째 스튜디오 앨범인 인조 셀렉션(2018)의 후속 앨범 역할을 하고 있다. 앨범 녹음 세션은 2019년 6월부터 11월까지 5개월 동안 오리건주 포틀랜드의 인터레이스 오디오에서 프로듀서 크리스 크럼메트와 함께 진행되었고 보컬은 캘리포니아 주 로스앤젤레스에서 프로듀서 드류 풀크와 함께 녹음되었다. 이 앨범은 밴드의 음악적 발전으로 간주되는데, 이 그룹은 그들의 원형적인 포스트-하드코어, 실험적인 록 스타일과 함께 펑크, 라틴, 랩, 메탈코어로 실험을 했기 때문이다.

배경

Dance Gavin Dance는 2018년 6월 8일 Rise Records를 통해 여덟 번째 스튜디오 앨범인 Industrial Selection을 발매했다.[5] 앨범 프로모션에는 주변기기, 돈 브로코, 해일, 탐욕, 천하천하로의 지원을 받아 2019 봄 투어가 포함되었다.[6] 댄스 가빈 댄스 또한 2018 가을 헤드라이닝 투어의 언더오스를 응원하는 투어로 순회공연을 했으며, 샌프란시스코에서 열린 첫 스완페스트 음악 축제의 선두에 섰다.[7][8]

2019년 3월 22일, 밴드는 뮤직비디오와 함께 단독 싱글인 "헤드 헌터"를 발매했다.[9] 또 다른 싱글 "Blood Wolf"는 뮤직비디오와 함께 10월 11일에 발매되었다.[10] 2019년 10월 이 밴드의 보컬리스트 틸리언 피어슨은 이 두 싱글이 밴드의 9번째 스튜디오 앨범에 나오지 않을 것이며, 앨범의 사운드를 나타내는 것도 아니라고 확인했다.[11]

2019년 5월 31일, 밴드는 인조 선택의 기악 버전을 발매했다.[12] 이들은 2019년 12월 27일 다운타운 배틀 마운틴을 끝으로 마더십이 6월 28일 발매되는 등 매월 마지막 주 금요일부터 스튜디오 음반의 기악 버전을 발매하는 패턴을 시작했다.[13] 2019년 8월 30일 밴드는 악보 버전과 함께 2013년 앨범 Acception Speech의 리마스터 버전을 발매했다.[14]

녹음

2019년 1월 댄스 가빈 댄스 리드 기타리스트 윌 스완은 트위터를 통해 크리스 크럼메트의 녹음 스튜디오인 인터레이스 오디오에서 오리건주 포틀랜드에서 신소재를 녹음하고 있다고 밝혔다.[15] 2019년 7월, 틸리언 피어슨은 다가오는 9번째 스튜디오 앨범을 위해 글을 쓰고 있다고 밝혔다.[16] 크럼메트는 9월 윌 스완, 시크릿 밴드 기타리스트 마틴 비안치니와 함께 기타를 추적했다.[17][18]

드러머 매튜 밍거스는 2019년 10월 인터뷰에서 새 앨범이 "매우 기술적인" 앨범이 될 것이며 15곡이 녹음되었다고 밝혔다.[19] 11월에 피어슨은 캘리포니아주 로스앤젤레스에서 음반 프로듀서 드류 풀크와 함께 앨범 보컬을 완성했다고 확인했다.[20] 앨범 믹싱은 크리스 크럼메트가 2019년 12월 완성했다.[21]

이 앨범에는 스트로베리걸스 기타리스트 재커리 가렌, 에이돌라 보컬리스트 겸 기타리스트 앤드루 웰스, 마야 기타리스트 마크 오쿠보의 베일, 시크릿 밴드 기타리스트 마틴 비안치니, 로열 코다 기타리스트 세르히오 메디나, 전 어택 어택 보컬 조니 프랑크(현 밴드 빌무리) 등 게스트 출연 목록이 수록되어 있다. 이 앨범에는 '라이시스 리'에 출연하는 웰스와 'Nothing Sky'에 출연하는 프랑크, 'Into the Sunsight'에 출연하는 등 두 번의 게스트 보컬 출연이 담겨 있다. 로얄 코다 드러머와 전 A Lot Like Birds 드러머였던 조셉 아링턴은 '프리즌저'[22]의 공동 작가로 인정받고 있다.

아트워크 및 앨범 제목

애프터버너의 앨범 아트워크는 스웨덴 일러스트레이터 겸 아티스트인 마티아스 아돌프손에 의해 설명되었는데, 그는 이전에 이 밴드의 데뷔 스튜디오 앨범인 다운타운 배틀 마운틴(2007) 이후 모든 댄스 가빈 댄스 앨범의 작품을 만들었다. 앨범 표지에는 가빈 애프터버너라는 이름의 로봇 미노타우르스의 모습이 그려져 있으며,[26] 주변 환경이 화염에 휩싸이는 동안 그 모습을 중심으로 웅크리고 있는 듯한 생물이 그려져 있다. 록사운드와의 인터뷰에서, 이 밴드는 과거 두 개의 스튜디오 앨범과 비슷하게, 더 화합적인 앨범을 만들 수 있도록 쓰기 세션에 앞서 이 작품을 받았다고 말했다.[27] 앨범 표지 벽화는 듀스원이 2020년 2월 캘리포니아 새크라멘토에 있는 Flame Club 측면에 그린 것이다.[28] 2020년 3월 18일, 존 메스는 앨범 표지 아트에 대한 참조 그림을 공유했다.[29]

앨범 제목인 애프터버너(Afterburner) 자체가 여러 가지 다른 의미와 이데올로기를 담고 있다. 애프터번, 심리학 용어는 과거 사건이 동화되기 전의 기간으로 정의된다. 이 밴드의 앨범 표지에 실린 이 밴드의 전설은 이 앨범 표지에 계속 묘사되고 있는 보편적인 이야기를 말해주고 있으며, 인조 선택을 위한 앨범 표지의 계속으로 간주되고 있다.

해제

밴드는 2020년 2월 21일 사전 주문 번들과 함께 애프터버너, 음반 커버 아트, 발매일을 발표했다. 앨범은 2020년 4월 24일 라이즈 레코드를 통해 디지털 다운로드 및 스트리밍 플랫폼에 발매되었다. COVID-19 대유행과 관련된 합병증으로 인해, 앨범의 물리적 판본이 2020년 7월 10일로 연기되었다.[30] Target 스페셜 디럭스 에디션에는 앨범의 기악 버전이 담긴 두 번째 디스크가 수록되어 있다.

싱글스

2020년 2월 21일 댄스 개빈댄스는 뮤직비디오와 함께 앨범의 리드 싱글 '프리즌저'를 발매했다.[31]

3월 12일, "Strawberry's Wake"는 뮤직비디오와 함께 두 번째 싱글로 발매되었다.[32]

4월 9일, "Lyrics Lie"는 뮤직비디오와 함께 앨범의 세 번째 싱글로 발매되었다.[33] 이 트랙은 에이돌라 기타리스트와 보컬 앤드류 웰스의 미인증 배경 보컬이 특징이다.[34] 이 노래의 영상은 캘리포니아 새크라멘토에 있는 Flame Club 옆면에 아티스트 듀스원이 앨범 표지의 벽화를 그리는 시간의 경과다.[35][28]

4월 16일, 네 번째 싱글 "Three Wishs"가 발매되었다. '세 가지 소원' 뮤직비디오는 팬들이 제출한 영상을 몽타주해 추상적이고 창의적인 방식으로 깔끔하게 정리하는 모습이 담겨 있다.[36] 이 영상에는 밴드의 멤버들도 등장한다.

2020년 7월 14일, 이 그룹은 "One In A Million"[37]이라는 곡의 애니메이션 뮤직비디오를 초연했다.

투어

2021년 2월 21일, 이 밴드는 폴리피아, 마야의 베일, 에이돌라, 울프앤베어 등과 함께 2021년 9월 7일부터 10월 20일까지 진행될 예정인 애프터버너 투어의 투어 연기일을 발표했다.[38] 당초 이 단체는 2020년 3월 12일부터 4월 25일까지 이어지는 봄 투어를 발표했으나 COVID-19 대유행으로 연기됐다.[39] 2020년 5월 크라운 더 엠파이어와 빌무리,[40][41] 유럽, 영국 등과 함께 미국에서 잇따라 열리는 투어 일정도 유행병으로 취소됐다.

이 밴드는 2020년 7월 17일 애프터버너 발매 홍보를 위해 트위치에서 라이브 콘서트를 열었다.[42] 2020년 12월 19일, 그들은 2020년 11월 캘리포니아 새크라멘토의 타워브릿지에서 촬영된 팬 투표 콘서트 스트리밍 이벤트인 트리 시티 세션 2를 방송했다.

애프터버너는 비평가들의 호평을 받으며 풀려났다. 킬 유어 스테레오의 알렉스 시버스는 이 앨범이 지금까지 이 밴드의 가장 일관된 앨범인 동시에 "직관적이고, 매력적이며, 감정적이고, 지각할 수 없을 정도로 복잡하다"고 썼다.[25] 펑크, 랩, 라틴, 팝의 분위기로 그들의 진보적인 포스트 하드코어 사운드를 멋있게 끌어올리는 신선한 아이디어와 다양한 장르적 영향을 동시에 담고 [25]있는 댄스 가빈 댄스 음반이다. 월 오브 사운드(Wall of Sound)는 이 앨범에 대해 "그들이 전달한 것은 고전 DGD처럼 들리면서도 전혀 그렇지 않은 혁신적인 앨범"이라고 긍정적인 평가를 내렸다.[46] 장면 대디의 앤디 캣츠는 "댄스 개빈 댄스 경력의 최고 기록"이라고 말할 정도였다.[47]
