2014년 뉴어크 시장 선거는 뉴저지에서 가장 인구가 많은 도시인 뉴어크에서 2014년 5월 13일에 실시되었다. 이번 경선은 뉴어크 사우스 워드 출신인 라스 바라카와 샤바르 제프리스 두 후보의 대결로 특징지어졌다. 뉴어크 시의원 9명 전 의석 선거도 실시됐다. 루이스 A. (미국 상원에 당선된) 코리 부커의 사임으로 뉴어크 시장이 된 퀸타나는 그 자리를 구하지 않았다.

투표율은 등록 유권자의 29.59%에 해당하는 45,071명이었다.[2] 여론조사 마감 직후 바라카는 샤바르 제프리스에게 2만2751표 대 2만260표를 얻어 승리를 선언했다.[3][4]

시의회

2014년 현재 뉴어크에는 152,294명의 등록 유권자가 있다.[14] 시 선거는 당파적이지[15] 않고 5월 2일 화요일에 실시되며 뉴어크 시의회 나인 시의원과 시장이 선출되었다.[16][17] 투표용지에 게재되려면 지난 총선(시 전체 후보 1498명, 구청[18] 후보 수백명)에 등록된 유권자 1%의 서명을 받아 청원서를 제출해야 한다. 관련 2014년 날짜:[19]

바라카와 제프리 ®

2013년 시장 출마를 선언한 몇몇 후보 중 샤바르 제프리스 전 법무부 차관과 라스 J. 바라카 시의원 등 2명이 인증을 받았다.[18][21] 애니발 라모스 주니어, 대린 샤리프 의원은 2014년 2월 12일 경선에서 탈락했다.[22] 바라카와 제프리 모두 뉴어크 태생으로 사우스 워드에 거주하고 있다.[23]

인구통계학

2010년 미국 인구조사에서 뉴어크의 인구는 277,140명이었다. The racial makeup of the city was 52.35% (145,085) Black or African American, 26.31% (72,914) White, 0.61% (1,697) Native American, 1.62% (4,485) Asian, 0.04% (118) Pacific Islander, 15.22% (42,181) from other races, and 3.85% (10,660) from two or more races.

뉴어크의 라틴어 비율은 1980년에서 2010년 사이에 18.6%에서 33.8%로 상당히 증가했고, 흑인 비율은 58.2%에서 52.4%로 약간 감소했다. 어떤 민족이든 히스패닉계나 라틴계 인종이 인구의 3분의 1인 33.83%(9만3746명)로 전체 인구의 13%가 푸에르토리코인이었다.[28][29] 지방선거에서 흑인-라티노 연합이 나타났지만, 투표는 인종적으로 양극화되는 경향이 있다.[30][31][32][33]

배경

부커 사임

고(故) 프랭크 로텐버그의 후임으로 10월 16일 치러진 미국 상원의원 특별선거에서 승리한 코리 부커는 시장직을 사임하고 2013년 10월 31일 뉴저지 출신의 미국 상원의원으로 취임했다.[34][35][36][37][38][39]

뉴어크 주민들은 시의회의 투표에 의해 임시 시장으로 선출될 수 있다고 규정되어 있지만, 일반적으로 뉴어크 시의회 의장은 그 자리에 오른다. 2012년 11월 도널드 페인 주니어의 사임으로 공석이 됐고, 평의회는 9명 대신 8명으로 남게 됐다.[40] 페인의 사임은 부커의 임명에 이의를 제기하는 반대자들과 2013년 11월 특별 선거 때까지 부커의 자리를 공석으로 남겨두는 최종적인 사법적 판결로 빈 의석을 차지하기 위한 권력 투쟁으로 이어졌다.[41][42][43][44][45][46]
