Cercartetus속은 피그미 주머니쥐로 알려진 매우 작은 주머니쥐의 집단이다.이 속은 4종으로 이루어져 있으며, 이 속은 버라미속과 함께 유대목 버라미과(Burramyidae)[1]를 구성한다.
때때로 Cercaerrtus가 Cercartetus의 [2][3]철자 오류 또는 동의어라고 추정되었다.그러나 Cercaértus라는 이름은 Trichosurus의 하위 동의어이며 Cercartetus의 [4][5][6][7]동의어가 아니다.
국제보존기구(CI)와 인도네시아과학연구소(LIPI)는 2007년 [8]6월 포자산맥을 방문했을 때 새로운 종의 Cercartetus pygmy possum이 발견될 가능성에 대해 보고했다.
