ICE(Information and Content Exchange, Information and Content Exchange)는 인터넷을 통한 콘텐츠 신디케이션에 사용되는 XML 기반 프로토콜이다.XML을 사용함으로써 송신자와 수신자 모두 통신할 수 있는 합의된 언어를 갖는다.ICE는 클라이언트-서버 아키텍처를 사용하여 CORBA와 DCOM에서 사용되는 바이너리 게시/구독 프로토콜 표준에 필적하는 신디케이트/구독 모델을 정의한다.그러나 ICE 메시지에서는 낮은 수준의 이진 프로토콜을 통해서가 아니라 일반적으로 HTTP 연결을 통해 XML을 통해 전달된다.[1]

역사

웹 신디케이션의 첫 번째 표준인 [2]ICE는 1998년 1월 Firefly Networks와 Vignette에 의해 제안되었다.[3]두 회사는 이 명세서에 대한 통제를 ICE 컨소시엄에 넘겼고, ICE 컨소시엄은 저작그룹과 자문위원회로 구성되었다.ICE Authoring Group은 마이크로소프트,[4] 어도비, 선, CNET, 내셔널 반도체, 트리뷴 미디어 서비스, 지프 데이비스, 로이터 등 13개 회사로 제한됐다.[5]ICE 자문회의에는 거의 100명의 회원들이 포함되어 있었다.[2]

ICE는 1998년 10월 26일 월드 와이드 웹 컨소시엄 표준 기구에 제출되어 다음날 언론 행사에서 선보였다.[6][7]표준은 W3C XML 규격이 자주 받은 오픈소스 구현의 혜택을 받지 못했다.[8]

프로토콜 버전 1.1은 2000년 7월 1일에 출판되었다.[9]버전 2.0은 향상된 웹 서비스 지원을 특징으로 하며 2004년 8월 1일에 출시되었다.[10]그 이후로 더 이상의 버전은 나타나지 않았다.

Vignette는 1998년 2월 ICE 지원 서버인 Site-to-Site의 데모 버전을 가지고 있었는데, 이 프로토콜이 웹사이트들 간의 컨텐츠 교환을 어떻게 용이하게 할 수 있는지를 보여주는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.[11]사이트 대 사이트는 1998년 여름에 처음 출시될 예정이었다.[3] 1999년 2월 22일에 Vignette Syndication Server라는 이름으로 출시되었다.[12]신디케이션 서버를 통해 비그넷은 주요 ICE 벤더가 되었다.[13]

1999년 6월, Vignette는 선도적인 웹 신디케이터 iSyndicate에 1,400만 달러를 투자하여 iSyndicate 웹사이트의 추가 개발을 위해 Vignette StoryServer를 채택했다.iSydicate는 거래의 일환으로 ICE 프로토콜에서 모든 컨텐츠를 이용할 수 있도록 하기 위해 노력했다.[14][15]

비교 가능한 XML 사양으로는 WDDX,[16] NITF, XMLNews, NewsML, 프리즘을 비롯해 CDF, RSS, Atom, Open Content Syndication(OCS) 등이 있다.[8][17]

구현

TwICE는 자바에서 ICE 2.0을 구현한 것이다.라이스는 ICE 1.1의 루비 구현이다.TwICE와 Rice는 모두 짐 메나드에 의해 개발되고 유지된다.

ICEcube는 2000년 12월 이후 적극적으로 유지되지 않고 있지만, ICE 1.1의 자바 참조 구현의 최초다.
