1642년 런던 극장 폐쇄
London theatre closure 1642제1차 영국 남북전쟁이 시작된 직후인 1642년 9월 2일, 롱 의회는 모든 런던 극장의 폐쇄를 명령했다. 이 명령은 현재의 '수모 시기'와 '불행한 미르와 레비티'의 대표인 '공공의 무대극'과의 호환성을 이유로 들었다.[1] 완전한 효력이 없었던 이 금지는 제2차 남북전쟁이 시작될 무렵인 1648년 2월 11일의 법률에 의해 강화되었다. 배우들을 악당 취급, 극장 좌석 철거, 관객들에게 벌금을 부과했다.[2]
1643년 1월 24일, 배우들은 '배우들은 그들의 직업을 침묵시키고 그들의 모든 극장에서의 추방'이라는 팸플릿을 써서 "우리는 모든 음란하고 음란한 농담의 우리의 무대를 제거했다"[3]고 말하면서 극장을 재개장해 줄 것을 의회에 요청했다.
1660년 영국 원정이 찰스 2세를 영국에서 효과적인 권력에 끌어들이자 연극 금지령이 해제되었다. 새로운 허가제 하에서, 왕실 특허를 가진 두 개의 런던 극장, 즉 킹스 컴퍼니와 듀크 컴퍼니가 문을 열었다.[4]
