이 속은 1912년 호주의 조류학자 그레고리 매튜스에 의해 우아한 호네이터([1]Microptilotis gracilis)가 모식종으로 소개되었습니다.Microptilotis라는 속명은 "작다"는 뜻의 고대 그리스어 미크로스와 [2]프틸로티스라는 속 이름을 합쳤다.

현재 Microptilotis에 속하는 종들은 이전에는 Meliphaga속으로 분류되었다.분자 계통학 연구가 멜리파가가 두 개의 다른 분지군을 가지고 있다는 것을 발견했을 때, 그 속은 분할되었고 많은 종들이 부활한 Microptilotis속으로 [3][4][5]옮겨졌다.
