Tumescence

발광은 발광하거나 부은 상태의 질이나 상태를 말한다. 발광은 보통 발기 조직의 혈액[1](혈관 혼잡)이 있는 정상적인 발기, 성적 흥분 표시, 성행위의 가능한 준비 상태를 말한다. 남성에게서 발광하는 성기관은 음경이고 여성에게서 발광하는 성기는 클리토리스와 전정구처럼 성기의 다른 부분들이다. 성기의 동맥은 혈액량을 증가시키기 위해 팽창한다.[2]

탈모는 혈액이 발기 조직을 떠나 발기 조직을 연약 상태로 되돌리는 이 과정을 역행하는 것이다.[3] 발기를 일으키는 것을 투미피어(tumefier) 또는 토미퍼(tumescer)라고 부르기도 한다.[4]
