역사

보스턴 제조 회사

월섬은 1634년 워터타운의 일부로 처음 정착되었고, 1738년 공식적으로 별도의 마을로 편입되었다.[4] 월섬은 1830년대까지 인정받을 수 있는 마을 회관을 가지고 있지 않았는데, 그 당시 인근 보스턴 제조 회사는 그 도시에 현재 중심 광장이 되고 있는 땅을 주었다.[5]

19세기 초, 프랜시스 카봇 로웰과 그의 친구들과 동료들은 미국 최초의 통합 섬유 공장인 보스턴 제조 회사 월섬에 하청 기반 섬유 산업에 내재된 조정, 품질 관리, 운송의 문제를 없애겠다는 목표를 가지고 설립되었다. 더 월텀-생산의 로웰 시스템은 그 이름이 시와 방앗간 설립자로부터 유래되었다.[6]

도시의 이름은 제1음절에 1차 응력, 제2음절에 풀모음, /ˈwɔlθm/WAWWL-tham으로 발음되지만, 제2음절에 월텀 시계의 이름은 /ˈwɔlθm/[42]로 발음된다. 대부분 영국식 발음인 "월섬"이 그랬듯이, 사람들이 노바스코샤로부터 제분소에서 일하게 되었을 때 발음이 진화했다. "로컬" 버전은 영국식으로 발음할 수 없는 프랑스어 사용자들을 수용하기 위한 음성 사운드가 되었다.

2000년 인구조사를[57] 기준으로 시내에는 5만9226명, 2만3207가구, 1만2462가구가 살고 있다. 인구밀도는 4,663.4/마일²(1,800.6/km2)이었다. 평방마일(726.0/km2)당 평균 밀도가 1880.3에 달하는 주택은 2만3880채였다. 도시의 인종 구성은 백인 82.98%, 흑인 4.41%, 아메리카 원주민 0.16%, 아시아인 7.29%, 태평양 섬사람 0.06%, 타 인종 3.20%, 2인 이상 인종 1.89%로 나타났다. 히스패닉계 또는 라틴계 인종은 인구의 8.49%이다.

예술과 문화
