이 정리는 모리스 아우스랜더와 데이비드 벅스바움(1959년)에 의해 처음 증명되었다.그들은 차원 3의 정기적인 국부 링이 고유한 요인화 도메인임을 보여주었고, 나가타 마사요시(1958)는 이것이 모든 일반 국부 링이 고유한 요인화 도메인임을 암시한다는 것을 이전에 보여주었다.
