서브클래스 헬리오스 클래스,[4] XL 클래스, 엑셀 클래스 [1][2][3]등 엑셀 클래스는 카니발 코퍼레이션이 자회사 브랜드 아이다 크루즈, 코스타 크루즈, P&O 크루즈, 카니발 크루즈 라인 등을 위해 발주한 크루즈선급이다.[5] 이 배들은 독일 파펜부르크에 있는 그들의 조선소에 있는 마이어 베르프트와 핀란드 투르쿠에 있는 그들의 조선소에 있는 마이어 투르쿠에 의해 건조되고 있다. 첫 번째, AIDAnova는 2018년 AIDA 크루즈 서비스를 시작했다.

역사

카니발사는 2015년 3월 마이어 베르프트와 2018~2022년 신규 선박을 건조하는 전략적 제휴를 맺었다.[6] 2015년 6월에는 2019~2020년 선박 4척이 인도 명령을 받았다.[7][8] 2016년 9월 카니발 크루즈 라인과 P&O 크루즈 3척이 2020년과 2022년 인도용으로 추가로 발주됐다.[9]

엑셀런스 클래스는 액화천연가스(LNG)와 전통 연료유를 이중으로 연료로 하는 세계 최초의 크루즈선이 될 예정으로 기존 경유 선박보다 친환경적으로 만들겠다는 취지다.[8] 각 배마다 9억 5천만 달러의 비용이 들 것으로 예상된다.[10]

그 반에서 처음 네 척의 배는 납기가 지연되었다. 아이다노바, 코스타 스메랄다, 마디그라스가 지연된 것은 이 선박들이 LNG로 가장 먼저 연료를 공급받았고, 설계상의 복잡성, 하청업체들의 조정의 어려움,[3] 그리고 선박의 큰 크기 때문이었다. 이오나의 지연은 P&O 크루즈의 일시적 운행 중단과 COVID-19 대유행 사태에 대한 대응으로 공사 진행이 더뎌졌기 때문이다.[11] Mardi Gras는 나중에 전염병으로 인해 2021년까지 연기되었다.[12]
