통일각은 남북 평화회담의 장이다.이 건물은 군사분계선 북쪽 공동경비구역에 위치하고 있다.[1]한국전쟁 이전까지 판문점이라는 마을은 살림꾼들로 이루어져 있었다.

군사분계선 북측에 자리 잡고 있는 통일(통일) 정자는 비군사적, 외교적 만남의 장으로도 활용된다.[2][3][4]범음각 북서쪽 80m(260ft)에 위치한 통일각은 1969년 지어진 지상 2층, 1500m(1만6000sqft) 건물이다.[5][6]남북회담 회의실에는 폐쇄회로(CC)TV와 마이크를 설치해 평양의 상황을 실시간으로 감시할 수 있도록 했다.

통일각의 일부는 북한군 인사실 공간에도 활용되고 있다.
