브라이언 핑커튼은 1994년 1월 27일 워싱턴 대학교에서 원래 데스크탑 애플리케이션이었던 WebCrawler를 처음 연구하기 시작했다.[2] 1994년 3월 15일, 그는 상위 25개 웹사이트의 목록을 만들었다.[1]

WebCrawler는 1994년 4월 21일에 그것의 데이터베이스에[2] 4,000개 이상의 다른 웹사이트를 가지고 시작되었고, 1994년 11월 14일에 WebCrawler는 "핵무기 디자인과 연구"[3]를 위한 100만번째 검색 질의서를[2] 제공했다.

1994년 12월 1일, WebCrawler는 두 개의 스폰서인 DragerNetStarwave를 인수하여 WebCrawler를 계속 운영할 수 있도록 자금을 제공하였다.[2] 1995년 10월 3일부터 WebCrawler는 광고에 의해 전폭적으로 지원되었지만, 검색 결과에서 광고를 분리했다.[2]

1995년 6월 1일, 아메리카 온라인(AOL)은 WebCrawler를 인수하였다.[2] 이 웹사이트는 AOL에 인수된 후 1995년 9월 1일 마스코트 "스파이디"를 선보였다.[2]

1996년 4월부터 WebCrawler는 또한 AOL 소유 하에 있던 사람이 편집한 인터넷 가이드 GNN Select도 포함시켰다.[2][4][5]

1997년 4월 1일, 익사이트는 AOL로부터 WebCrawler를 1,230만 달러에 인수했다.[2][6]

WebCrawler는 Excres 자체 데이터베이스를 사용하기 시작한 2001년까지 Excres에 의해 자체 데이터베이스를 가진 별도의 검색 엔진으로 유지되어, WebCrawler를 사실상 독립 검색 엔진으로 종지부를 찍었다.[8] 그해 말 익사이즈(당시 익사이즈@라고 불렀다))은 파산했고 WebCrawler는 2001년에 InfoSpace에 인수되었다.[2]

WebCrawler의 창시자인 핑커튼은 2012년 현재 아마존닷컴 검색 부문을 이끌고 있다.[9][10]

2016년 7월 모기업 블루코라가 오픈메일에 4500만 달러에 매각한 인포스페이스는 웹크롤러가 오픈메일의 소유권을 갖게 됐다.[11] OpenMail은 나중에 System1로 이름이 바뀌었다.[12]

2018년에는 웹클롤러가 처음부터 새롭게 디자인되어 검색엔진의 로고가 변경되었다.[13][14]

교통

WebCrawler는 초기에 매우 성공적이었다.[15] 한때는 서버 과부하로 인해 피크타임에 사용할 수 없게 되었다.[16] 1996년 2월 인터넷에서 두 번째로 많이 방문한 웹사이트였지만, 1997년 야후!, 인포섹, 라이코스, 익사이트와 같은 경쟁 검색 엔진과 디렉토리 아래로 빠르게 떨어졌다.[17]
