구조화된 Word Inquiry(SWI)는 단어의 철자를 과학적으로 조사하는 것을 포함하는 교육학 기법이다.[1][2][3] SWI는 형태학,[4][5] 어원학, 친척, 음운학을 고려한다.[3][6] SWI의 지침 원칙은 (1) "영어 철자의 주요 기능은 의미를 나타내는 것"[7]과 (2) "영어 철자가 의미를 나타내는 개념은 매우 질서 정연하고 신뢰할 수 있어 과학적 연구를 통해 철자를 조사하고 이해할 수 있다"[6][8][9]이다.

네 문제

SWI는 단어의 철자를 조사하기 위해 네 가지 질문을 사용한다.[6][10]

  1. 단어의 의미는 무엇인가?
  2. 그 단어의 형태는 무엇인가?
  3. 그 단어의 형태학적, 어원학적 친족관계는 무엇인가?
  4. 단어에서 글자들은 무엇을 하고 있는가? (말하는 음소, 마커로서의 기능, 영점화)

그 의의부터 시작하는 순서대로 문제를 조사해야 한다.

단어 합

단어 합은 단어가 어떻게 지어지는지를 보여준다.[10][11] 합이라는 단어는 "정형적 형태학적 구조의 가설의 위조를 허용하는 필요한 도구"[3][6]이다.

단어 합계의 예는 다음과 같다.

  • de + 부호 -> 디자인
  • de + sign + disped + ed->
  • 부호 + al -> 신호
  • 기호 + 먹음 + 요소 -> 기호
  • re + 사인 + 식사 + 이온 -> 체념
