The hypothalamic–pituitary–somatotropic axis (HPS axis), or hypothalamic–pituitary–somatic axis, also known as the hypothalamic–pituitary–growth axis, is a hypothalamic–pituitary axis which includes the secretion of growth hormone (GH; somatotropin) from the somatotropes of the pituitary gland into the circulation and the subsequent stimulation of 인슐린 유사 성장 인자 1 (IGF-1; 소마토메딘-1) 간과 같은 조직에서 GH에 의한 생성.[1][2][3] 성장호르몬 방출호르몬(GHRH; 소마토크린), 성장호르몬 억제호르몬(GHIH; 소마토스타틴), 그렐린()GHS 등 그 밖의 저체온-피튜리 호르몬이 뇌하수체로부터의 GH 분비 조절에 관여하고 있다.[1] HPS축은 산후 인간의 성장에 관여한다.[1] 성장호르몬 결핍증이나 라론증후군(GHR불감증)이 있는 개인은 단신, 왜소증, 비만과 같은 증상을 보이기도 하지만, 어떤 형태의 암으로부터도 보호된다.[4][5] 반대로 아크로롬갈리와 거인증은 뇌하수체 종양에 의한 GH와 IGF-1의 과잉상태로, 과성장과 키가 큰 것이 특징이다.[6][7]
