루이 필립 셸던은 1934년 워싱턴에서 렉스와 거트루드 셸던의 아들로 태어났다.그의 아버지는 영국 프로테스탄트 전통에서 자랐고, 어머니는 정통 유대인이었다.[6][7][8]그는 10대에 기독교인이 되었다.그는 1957년 미시간 주립대학에서 역사적으로 B.S를 받았다.[9]쉘든과 그의 아내 베벌리는 1957년 8월 24일에 결혼하여 4명의 자녀를 두었다.[10][11]

그는 M학점을 받았다.1960년에 프린스턴 신학교에서 나온 신학부장도 장로교 목사로 임명되었다.그는 노스다코타와 캘리포니아의 교회 목사로 일하다가 로비스트로 독립했다.[12]
