쿠웨이트 시민들의 주요 종교는 이슬람교로 쿠웨이트 시민의 대다수가 이슬람교도로 60%~65%가 수니파, 35%~40%가 시아파로 추정된다.[1][2][3] 2001년에는 약 52만5천명의 수니파 쿠웨이트 시민과 30만명의 시아 쿠웨이트 시민이 있었다.[4] 2002년 미 국무부는 쿠웨이트 시민 인구의 30%~40%를 시아스가 형성했다고 보고하면서 수니파 쿠웨이트 시민은 52만5000명(수니파 61%, 시아 39%)에 이르고 있다.[5][5] 2004년에는 수니파 쿠웨이트 시민 60만 명, 시아 쿠웨이트 시민 30만35만 명, 쿠웨이트 시민 93만3000명으로 추산됐다.[6]
쿠웨이트 사회에는 다른 소수 이슬람 종파가 존재하지만, 매우 작거나 드문 수가 있다. 비시민 이슬람교도의 수에 대한 추정치는 없다.
