거북이 손짓

어색한 거북이는 순간이나 상황을 어색한 것으로 조용히 표시하기 위해 사용하는 은어 양손 제스처다. 그 이후로 거북이와 유사한 수많은 스핀오프 손동작이 생겨났다(예: 페이스북 페이지를 가지고 있는 어색한 야자수, 어색한 종소리, 어색한 징, 어색한 뿔, 어색한 텐트, 어색한 칠면조, 어색한 거북이가 새끼를 낳는다). 그 제스처는 대부분의 경우에 장난스럽게 그리고 아이러니하게 사용된다. 일부 사람들은 이 제스처를 취하는 것은 일종의 사회적 불편함을 축하하는 것이라고 말했다.[1][2][3]

역사

한 학생 저널리스트는 2006년 2월 3일 펜실베이니아 대학교에서 거북이 손놀림의 유비쿼터스성에 대해 보도했다.[2] 2008년까지 페이스북에는 500개 이상의 '어색한 거북이' 그룹이 있었는데, 그 중 가장 많은 수가 2만 7천 명 이상의 회원을 가지고 있었다고 한다.[6] 언어에 관한 공영 라디오 프로그램인 "A Way with Words"는 2009년 10월 10일 "어려운 거북이"에 대한 코너에서 UCLA의 은어로 그것을 인용했다.[11]

2018년 1월 현재 거북이를 위한 어반 사전의 '톱 디펜스'도 2005년 9월 6일 게재된 가장 오래된 것이다.[12] 2012년 7월부터 2017년 11월까지 5년 동안의 스냅사진에 따르면 2013년 2월 도시사전의 '어색한 거북이' 관련 활동이 정점을 찍었다.[12]
